What is a Hackney Carriage?
A Hackney Carriage is the term used in the UK to describe a taxi that has earned the right to ply for hire on the streets without having to be pre-booked. The term comes from the Haquenue horse that used to pull cabs. It had a steady gait (a smooth rhythmic walking style) which gave a smoother ride. London Hackney carriages are the oldest licensed form of public transport in the world. Licensing dates back to 1654 under Oliver Cromwell
How are payments processed?
All payments are invoiced and must be paid prior to the tour commencing. A holding deposit is processed to confirm your booking. This must be paid using the Pay by Card button on the invoice (Visa/MasterCard/Amex). The same method can be used to settle the final balance prior to the our commencing. Cash and credit card payments can be taken on the day and are due at the start of the tour. Please indicate if this is your preference when booking so invoicing can be adjusted appropriately.
What if I (the client) need to cancel?
We operate a 48hr cancellation policy from the agreed start time (hh:mm) of your tour. Tours cancellation after this will result in your deposit being retained. Time of notification will be deemed as when an e-mail is time stamped and should a call or voice message be left the time stamp placed on it by the network.
Less than 48 hours notice: If you have paid the full balance of your tour upfront, your money less your deposit will be returned.
Less than 24 hours notice: Full balance for the tour is due as we will be unable to book further clients in.
What if I book at short notice and need to cancel. If you book with less than 48 hours before the start time of your tour your deposit will be retained.
How long does a tour last and when is the start time?
Start times are agreed in your booking and are clearly indicated on the PDF booking confirmation. The clock used is the CMT clock which is provided as part of the CMT credit card payment system and is the same across all CMT Taxis.
We have a “grace period” of 15 mins after the agreed start time to allow for things such as finishing breakfast or meals and getting to meet your guide before the timer starts running.
We give an indication of how long a tour lasts and endeavour to stick to these timings where possible. London traffic can be unpredictable at times and may impact adversely on timings.
What happens if I'm (the client) running late?
Your guide will attempt to make contact with you on arrival at the meeting point and will leave a text message and a voice message (if your service provider offers this). Your guide will wait for a maximum of 30mins after which they will deem you as a no-show and can choose to leave. Your balance will be retained at this point.
What happens if London Black Taxi Tours is running late?
We also aim to deliver a prompt and professional service. Our guides try to arrive in advance of the start time so they can notify you or the concierge in good time. If we are running late we will make every effort to call and message you. Should the tour start late due to our fault, the allotted time will not start until you are with us.
What if London Black Taxi Tours cancels?
In the event of sickness or a vehicle failure on the part of London Black Taxi Tour you will be refunded any monies you have paid to us along with an invitation to re-book at a discount for the inconvenience caused.
